Special Educational Needs Centre

The centre was established in 2001 to introduce the use of Dramatherapy, Expressive Arts, Playtherapy and Psychodrama as a form of intervention with various populations. This is done with the intention to heal and help individuals in crises/special needs to expand their quality of life. It is intended also to develop communication skills and to draw out talents in ordinary children.

The Centre which is an NGO, aims to assist schools in Accra to develop support programmes for pupils who are at risk from dropping out of school due to special needs. They are the biggest resource centre for special needs education and are heavily supported by the British High Commission, but interns should be aware that it is a small organisation with very limited resources.

The centre is run and was founded by Mrs Jane Dove. She has a Ba in English and Drama together with an Ma from Manchester University (UK) in Special Educational Needs.

The centre is looking for the following Interns:

• Special Educational Needs Teacher. The ideal candidate will have a both academic and teaching experience with special needs children.

• Special Educational Needs Classroom Assistant. The ideal candidate will have either academic or teaching experience with special needs children.

A Playtime Coordinator is required to help give one-on-one attention to the children through activities such as drama, dance, art, music and games. The ideal person will be hands on, hard working and devoted to the children.

Drama Therapist. The ideal candidate will have either academic or work experience in drama therapy.

• Office Administrator is needed to work alongside the director in the office. The ideal person will be hands on, hard working and devoted to the children.

Art Therapist. The ideal candidate will have either academic or work experience in art therapy.

Clinical Psychologist is needed to reduce psychological distress and enhance and promote the psychological well being of the children. The ideal candidate will have at least an educational background in psychology.

A Speech and Language Therapist is required to work closely with the children who all have various levels of speech and communication. The ideal candidate will have at least an educational background in speech and language therapy.

An Occupational Therapist is required to work closely with the children to gain more confidence and control by designing treatment programs. The ideal candidate will have both educational and work experience in OT.

What kind of skills you need for this placement:
Candidates must be hands on, dependable and devoted to the children. You will need to be flexible and tolerant, show initiative and enthusiasm to face the many hurdles and challenges that you will encounter.

In order to maintain the sustainability and high performance of this project all interns are required to complete a detailed hand-over document for successive interns.

Health and Safety
There are a number of health clinics and hospitals in the area. Volunteers should show due care and diligence whilst in placement. We recommend volunteers do not walk alone at night. Refrain from bringing expensive items as these attract attention.

Other details
• The intern will be housed in our accommodation in the centre of town, it is clean and well maintained. Previous interns described the accommodation as "a lovely haven in all the chaos." The accommodation is centrally located to Accra, with it possible to walk to nearby shops, communication centres, bars and restaurants.
• The accommodation has 24/7 security, a fully furnished kitchen, housekeepers, a large garden, all upstairs rooms have access to balconies, a large dining and living room.
• Washing & ironing facility is available.
• Please arrive on a weekday to avoid being surcharged for weekend pick-ups.
• There are small stores in the neighbourhood and larger supermarkets can be found a 5-min drive away.
