3. Getting ready to travel.
We advise you to contact your doctor or a travel clinic at least two months before traveling and get advice on traveling to Ghana, a tropical country.
We recommend that you have the following protection:
- Yellow Fever Vaccine (Required for the Ghanaian Visa; good for ten years)
- Malaria Pills (Required)
- Typhoid (Required. Good for five years)
- Tetanus, TB and Polio (as recommended by your doctor)
- Immunoglobulin or Hepatitis A Vaccine (Strongly recommended. The vaccine requires re-immunization 6-12 months later, but is good for a much longer period)
- Hepatitis B Vaccine (highly recommended)
- Meningococcal Vaccine (Optional. Discuss with your doctor)
Please be aware that we are not trained medical professionals and as such you should ask your doctor or travel clinic which vaccinations to have.
We strongly recommend that you bring a well-stocked first aid kit.

What is the best way to get to Ghana?
We recommend you fly into Accra Kotoka Airport. There are a number of carriers who fly to Accra including British Airways, Delta, Alitalia, KLM, Kenya Airways and Ghana International Airlines. We recommend you start your search at cheapflights.com or opodo.com. Return flights from London will approximately cost between £350 and £600 depending on the time of year that you travel.
Please ensure you send us your arrival details so that when you arrive at the airport you will be met by an Africa Intern representative who will take you to your accommodation.
Upon arrival at Accra International Airport, please exit the building to the meeting area. A member of staff will be there to meet you, please keep an eye out for a sign with your name on it.
Will my current medical insurance be enough?
Probably not. You need to make sure that you are covered should you loose your luggage, your flight gets cancelled, you need emergency evacuation, your possessions are covered, should your trip be cancelled, etc.

I know I need travel insurance but where can I get it?
You must organise your own fully comprehensive travel and medical insurance prior to travel to cover your belongings, travel arrangements and health care. Have you received all of my documentation?
You are responsible for making sure you have sent all the necessary documentation to Africa Intern 14 days before travel. Please remember you will risking your placement should we not have received it on time.
