Who are Africa Intern?
Africa Intern is an Ikando project. Ikando was founded by two volunteers from the UK and Holland who had become exasperated at the difficulty and expense of volunteering despite the range of opportunities available. Our objective is to help more people gain the life changing, life affirming experiences that volunteering can give. We are committed to enabling skill transfer, enabling organisations in the developing world to access different skill sets and to helping volunteers realize the value they can add using the skills they hold.

How did it start?
Laura, our founder, was an intern in Ghana and kept coming across organisations who were in need of volunteers & interns. She knew how much she personally had gained from the experience and how it had changed her views on a lot of things and decided to enable other potential volunteers & interns to have the same opportunity.

What's special about Ikando?
Ikando is not like most other volunteer organisations in two important ways:
- We only recruit volunteers & interns for organisations in Ghana. Why? This allows us to know the country inside and out and as such we can meet your needs better. Our wide range of placements is an indication of how well known we are in Ghana. From USAID projects to organisations on the refugee settlement Ikando can find you a placement of interest to you.
It also means that our main office is based in Ghana. Unlike most placement organisations we don't just have one member of staff in country. We have seven members of staff who are there to ensure you have a great experience.
- We do not recruit for our own projects but for organisations independent of Ikando. This means that our volunteers & interns work for genuine projects in Ghana.

What are Ikando's aims?
Ikando's main aims are two-fold:
- To provide organisations in Ghana with quality, dedicated and hard-working volunteers & interns who will help the organisations with the work they in turn do.
- To provide volunteers & interns with a quality placement and take back with them a good understanding of the needs of the developing world and how their own life impacts this.
Africa has a lot of positive things going for it. In many ways Ghanaians are much richer than people in the West and we hope that our volunteers & internscome to appreciate this.
