School for the Deaf This School for the Deaf aims to give formal education to hearing-impaired children in Ghana. The school seeks to equip its students with basic literacy, numeracy and problem solving skills. Furthermore it teaches its students important skills such as carpentry, farming, and dressmaking, enabling the students to be participants in the socio-economic life of this developing nation. It is an amazing school, such a happy, vibrant and positive school.
They require the following interns: • Agriculture teacher: someone who can develop and foster the students' interest in Agriculture. The aim is to enable the children to teach others in their community the skills they learn at school. interns are required to have some kind of background in either farming or biology. Code: AI01CD • Sports teacher: The sports teacher, should organize games for the children, create lesson plans and generally encourage the students to pursue sport. A strong interest in sport and a willingness to work with the children is required. Code: AI02CD • A classroom assistant is needed to help supervise the children and check their work. Ideally the intern would have working knowledge of sign-language and an interest in teaching. Code: AI03CD Please be aware that some of the above positions require a knowledge of sign language. What kind of skills you need to go on this placement: Interns must have a strong interest in disability issues and commitment to helping disadvantaged children. You will need to be flexible and tolerant, show initiative and enthusiasm to face the many hurdles and challenges that you will encounter. You will have to be able to cope with simple living and working conditions. In order to maintain the sustainability and high performance of this project all interns are required to complete a detailed hand-over document for successive interns. Where is the placement based? The placement is based just outside of Cape Coast. Cape Coast is the regional capital of the Central Region about 145km west of Accra. It is a historic town and the first capital of Ghana. It was the first town to come into contact with the "white man" so it is often referred to as the "white man’s town". It enjoys a lot of top ranking educational facilities and can boast of some of the best schools in the country. Cape Coast is built on hills and has a lively, bustling central area around the old slave castle and market. The slave castle is one of Ghana's prime tourist attractions in the region where Elimina castle and Kakum National Park can also be found. There is a big market called Kotokuraba Market.
